About Virium
I founded Virium Energy Management in 2024 because I wanted to work directly with clients, understand their challenges properly and remain personally involved throughout the assignment.
I began my career as an engineer at British Energy in 1992. Since then, I’ve worked across nuclear, power, utilities, oil and gas, industrial energy, building services and manufacturing, in the UK and internationally.
My job titles may have changed over the years from engineer and project manager to commercial director and managing director, but the part of the work that I truly enjoy has remained the same; getting into the detail of a difficult problem, bringing the right peopel and expertise together and moving the work towards a clear and deliverable outcome.
After more than 34 years leading engineering projects, teams and businesses, I wanted to use that experience more directly. Virium allows me to stay close to the work and take personal responsibility for the advice and service our clients receive.
Why I created Virium
A technically sound idea is only valuable if it works for the business and the people who will operate it. Engineering, cost, programme and operations cannot be treated separately. Before recommending a solution, I want to understand how the site or business actually works, what is driving the need and which constraints are real so only then can the potential energy, operational benefits and the investment case be properly assessed
Clients don’t always come to Virium with a fully defined project. Often it’s an issue or concern that needs sorting. They may have unreliable plant, rising energy costs, a production constraint, a decarbonisation target or a project that has lost direction. My first responsibility is to establish what problem really needs to be solved, what remains uncertain and what needs to happen next. If an investment is not yet technically or commercially justified, I will say so. It’s better to ask those difficult questions early on, rather than allowing a client to commit time and money to the wrong solution.
What experience has taught me
Where additional expertise is required, I bring in trusted specialists selected for the needs of the project, while remaining responsible for coordinating their input and overall delivery. Clients therefore have a clear senior point of contact without carrying the cost or complexity of an unnecessarily large team.
Virium can undertake a defined study, lead an engineering project from feasibility through implementation and commissioning, or provide interim leadership when a business needs experienced direction and control. What I want Virium to be known for is straightforward: understanding the client’s problem, giving honest advice and seeing the work through to a properly delivered result.
Working with Virium
I have always believed that good engineering means understanding the real need and taking responsibility for the outcome, not simply producing a design or report.
That belief is at the heart of Virium: Value Is only Realised when Innovation begins with Understanding what the client needs, choosing the solution best suited to the requirement and delivering it through effective project Management.
